November 25th marked Small Business Saturday in the US, a celebration and promotion of small and independent American businesses. Now in it’s 8th year, Small Business Saturday generated $12.9 billion in revenue and encouraged 112 million shoppers to support businesses in their local community.


The UK looks forward to its own Small Business Saturday on December the 2nd. Here are some ways to take part and maximise your opportunity for self-promotion and support independent businesses in your local economy.

Small Business Saturday reaches out to millions of shoppers each year. By registering your business with Small Business Saturdays database, prospective customers can search for your business all year round.

Celebrating Small Business Saturday

Showing your support needn’t be time consuming or tedious. Simply download the logos and display them in your window, add them to your website or share them on your social media platforms. The US event, which is sponsored by American Express, ensured 43% of American adults either shopped or dined small on the day.

The National Federation of Independent Business released the 2017 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey which showed that 70% of US consumers are aware of Small Business Saturday. By spreading the word, you play your part in highlighting the value of independents in your local area and encouraging consumers to take part all across the UK.

The US insight survey also revealed more than 7,200 "neighbourhood champions," got involved sponsoring and supporting the event. These organisations and associations engaged with more than 2 million small businesses across the US and found that the most popular reason for shopping small was to support the local community.

By keeping a hand in with the local community you can encourage loyalty and support all year round. Even just small things such as offering free space for local events, donating raffle prizes or hosting a neighbourhood noticeboard, your business becomes central to the community it’s a part of.
